Hugh Olañeta Young

Hugh Olañeta Young was a statesman, land heir, and descendant of the intertwined Olañeta, Espaldon, and Young families. As the only son of Conrad Young and Cherrie Espaldon Olañeta-Young, Hugh grew up within a household shaped by both political leadership and the memory of powerful plantation dynasties.

His childhood was marked by two strong influences. From his father, Conrad Young—known for his charisma, public service, and philanthropy as governor—Hugh inherited an understanding of leadership and responsibility toward the people of Negros Occidental. From his mother, Cherrie Espaldon Olañeta-Young, he inherited a deep awareness of family history and the moral weight carried by their lineage.

Hugh later pursued legal studies at a renowned university in Metro Manila. It was during his years as a law student that he met Bethilde Maglasang, a woman whose presence would quietly reopen one of the most painful chapters in the history of his family.

Hugh fell in love with Bethilde and eventually brought her to meet his mother, hoping to receive Cherrie’s blessing for marriage.

Instead, the meeting forced the past to resurface.

Cherrie reminded her son of the Maglasang–Olañeta Tragedy, the historic betrayal that had devastated the Olañeta family generations earlier. The tragedy had begun with Pedro Maglasang, whose actions caused financial ruin and heartbreak within the household of Maria Linda Olañeta. For Cherrie, the wounds left by that history were not distant memories but living lessons about loyalty, trust, and the fragile nature of family alliances.

In reminding Hugh of this history, Cherrie made it clear that she could not approve a union between the Olañeta line and the Maglasang family.

Faced with the weight of his mother’s words and the legacy of his ancestors, Hugh ultimately chose to honor his family’s wishes. Though the decision came at personal cost, he agreed not to pursue marriage with Bethilde Maglasang.

Following his legal education, Hugh entered public life.

Inspired by the example of his father Conrad Young, Hugh began his political career in Negros Occidental. He first served as Governor, continuing the Young family’s tradition of leadership within the province. His governance emphasized stability, agricultural development, and regional cooperation among the plantation communities that formed the backbone of the island’s economy.

After his term as governor, Hugh was elected as Congressman, representing his district at the national level. His career later advanced further when he was elected to the Senate, solidifying his reputation as one of the prominent political figures associated with the Young family.

Hugh eventually married Valerie Reyes-Young, a formidable business leader who later became Chairwoman and Chief Executive Officer of the Young Group. Their union brought together political leadership and corporate stewardship within the family’s expanding network of influence.

Through this marriage, the Young and Reyes lineages became formally connected, reinforcing the dynasty that would shape the next generation.

Hugh and Valerie’s daughter, Casilda Vianca Reyes Young, would later inherit the combined legacy of these families—carrying forward the intertwined histories of the Olañeta, Espaldon, Young, and Reyes dynasties.

Within family history, Hugh Olañeta Young is remembered as a man who stood at the intersection of personal sacrifice and public responsibility: a son who honored the memory of his ancestors, and a leader who carried the political legacy of his father into the next era of the family’s story.
