Medina Family
The Medina Family is one of the prominent families in Manila society, best known for their leadership of the Medina Medical Group and their long-standing presence in Forbes Park, Makati.
For decades, the family has been associated with the country’s private healthcare industry through the work of Luca Medina, the chairman of the Medina Medical Group. Under his leadership, the organization grew into a respected medical network, placing the Medina name among the influential families connected to healthcare, philanthropy, and professional medicine in the Philippines.
Despite their public standing, the history of the Medina household is also deeply shaped by personal stories of love, friendship, and loss.
At the center of the family’s earlier generation was Kristina Medina, the matriarch whose presence helped anchor the household for many years. Kristina was known not only for her refined sense of society but also for her warmth toward the people closest to her. She shared a particularly deep friendship with Cherrie Espaldon Olañeta–Young, a bond that often brought the two families together.
Their homes in Forbes Park once shared a large garden planted with Balayong trees, where the two women would often sit for tea while their grandchildren played beneath the blossoms. The friendship between Kristina and Cherrie created a connection between the Medina and Young families that would continue long after their lifetimes
Kristina’s son, Luca Medina, later married Elara Gil-Medina, an actress and international model admired for her beauty and grace. Their marriage was widely remembered as a deeply devoted partnership, and Elara was often described by those who knew them as the great love of Luca’s life.
Together they had one daughter, Alex Gil Medina.
Alex’s childhood, however, was marked by a series of profound losses. Her mother died when she was only nine years old, leaving Kristina to take on the role of raising her granddaughter within the Medina home. For several years, Kristina became Alex’s closest guardian and emotional anchor, allowing the spirited child to grow with warmth and freedom despite the absence of her mother.
Kristina died from a brain aneurysm when Alex was fifteen, a moment that again reshaped the structure of the family.
After Kristina’s death, Luca Medina eventually married Elodie Mantoya, a former friend of Elara and his executive secretary. Elodie became the second wife of Luca Medina and the stepmother of Alex Gil Medina, marking a new and more complicated chapter in the family’s story.
Today, the Medina Family remains closely associated with the Medina Medical Group as well as the Forbes Park residence where much of the family’s history unfolded. Their story is remembered not only through business influence but also through the relationships that shaped the household—from the enduring love between Luca and Elara, to Kristina’s devotion to her granddaughter, and the lasting ties between the Medina and Young families that began beneath the Balayong trees of their shared garden.
