Zompocalypse — When the World Started Biting Back
Zompocalypse. It did not begin with an army.
It began with a mushroom.
The Zompocalypse is the catastrophic outbreak at the center of Mewmiwmiw Takes Back the World, transforming ordinary life across Maomao Country into a fight for survival, discovery, and eventually, reclamation.
Its unlikely beginning can be traced to Astroshroom: a tiny extraterrestrial fungus that arrived on Earth aboard a meteorite and landed in a tropical forest outside Metro Mao.
Then somebody ate it.
Things deteriorated rather quickly after that.

How It Started
Before the Zompocalypse, Astroshrooms were simply visitors from somewhere beyond Earth.
A meteorite carried the small purple fungi through space before crashing into a forest outside Metro Mao. With their star-speckled caps and cheerful little faces, the mushrooms hardly looked dangerous.
A group of mice camping in the forest encountered them. One Astroshroom eventually found its way into a salad.
That meal became the beginning of something much larger.
The Infection
Once Astroshroom enters a suitable host, the organism begins changing it.
Normal behavior deteriorates. Hunger becomes extreme. Infected creatures become aggressive and increasingly driven by an overwhelming desire for protein.
They do not become brilliant hunters.
Quite the opposite.
The infected can be erratic, ridiculous, persistent, and spectacularly stupid. Unfortunately, being stupid does not prevent something from being dangerous when there are enough of them.
And there are eventually enough of them.
“PROTEIN!!!”
The defining obsession of the infected is protein.
Food stops being merely food. Protein becomes a mission.
An infected creature may stumble, drool, chase the wrong target, crash into things, or generally demonstrate very little evidence that thoughtful decision-making remains part of its daily routine.
But when it detects a possible source of protein, the message is remarkably clear:
“PROTEIN!!!”
How the Zompocalypse Spreads
The original infection begins through Astroshroom itself, but the danger does not remain in the forest.
Once infected hosts begin biting others, the outbreak gains a way to spread from creature to creature. What started as an encounter with an unknown mushroom becomes a chain of infections capable of reaching populated areas.
Metro Mao is no longer dealing with one strange organism.
It is dealing with an outbreak.
The Mushroom on the Head
One of the strangest signs of infection is also one of the easiest to recognize.
Astroshrooms can appear growing from infected hosts.
The result is absurdly distinctive: a shambling, hungry infected creature may look completely ridiculous with a cute purple mushroom happily sitting on its head.
The mushroom, naturally, continues looking adorable.
This is not reassuring.
Then There Is Milk
For an organism capable of helping turn ordinary life into a Zompocalypse, Astroshroom has a surprisingly ordinary enemy.
Milk.
Milk and certain milk-associated components interfere with the organism, creating one of the most important weaknesses discovered during the outbreak.
That becomes particularly significant for Mewmiwmiw Cato, a young cat who already happens to have a very serious relationship with milk pudding.
For most people, dessert is dessert.
For Mew, dessert may be research.
A World to Take Back
The Zompocalypse is not simply the end of the old world. It is the beginning of the central struggle in Mewmiwmiw Takes Back the World.
Metro Mao falls into chaos. Ordinary places become dangerous. Young survivors must protect one another, understand what is happening, and discover how the infection works before they can hope to stop it.
But this is not a story about sitting around waiting for the world to fix itself.
Mew and the young cats of Maomao Country intend to take it back.
One city at a time.
One discovery at a time.
And, apparently, one milk pudding at a time.
