Yongwang: The Dragon King Who Rules the Korean Seas

In Korean mythology, the vast oceans are not empty waters but the domain of powerful rulers known as Dragon Kings. The most prominent among them is Yongwang (용왕), the Dragon King who governs the seas and commands the creatures that live beneath the waves.

The legend of Yongwang appears in Korean folklore, Buddhist-influenced mythology, and traditional storytelling dating back to the Goryeo and Joseon periods. The Dragon King is believed to reside in an underwater palace known as Yonggung (용궁), a magnificent kingdom hidden beneath the sea.

One of the most famous folktales involving Yongwang is the story often called “The Rabbit’s Liver.” In the tale, the Dragon King becomes ill and is told that a rabbit’s liver could cure him. A loyal turtle servant travels to the human world to capture a rabbit, but the clever animal tricks the dragon court and escapes.

Physically, Yongwang is usually depicted as a majestic dragon with long whiskers, antler-like horns, and shimmering scales. Unlike many dragons in Western myths, Korean dragons are generally benevolent and wise. They are closely associated with water, rainfall, and agricultural prosperity.

Historically, fishermen and coastal communities prayed to the Dragon King for calm seas and successful fishing. Rituals honoring Yongwang were sometimes performed to ensure safety during voyages and to bring favorable weather.

The figure of the Dragon King reflects Korea’s deep cultural connection to water and nature. The sea could be both generous and dangerous, and honoring its ruler was believed to maintain balance between humans and the natural world.

Even today, Yongwang remains one of the most respected figures in Korean mythology, representing the powerful yet protective spirit of the ocean.
