Eopsin: The Household Spirit of Wealth and Prosperity
In traditional Korean folk religion, many homes were believed to contain guardian spirits. One of the most important was Eopsin (업신), the protector of wealth and household fortune.
Unlike large mythical beasts or ghosts, Eopsin was usually imagined as a small serpent-like creature living quietly inside the home, often near storage areas where rice or valuables were kept.
The belief in Eopsin dates back to Korean shamanistic traditions that existed long before organized religions spread across the peninsula.
Families believed that if Eopsin remained happy and undisturbed, the household would enjoy prosperity and stability.
Because of this belief, people avoided harming snakes that appeared near their homes, thinking they might be manifestations of the household spirit.
Offerings were sometimes made to ensure the spirit remained satisfied.
The presence of Eopsin symbolized financial stability and protection against poverty.
In many ways, the spirit reflects an ancient understanding that prosperity must be protected and respected.
Even today, the legend of Eopsin provides a glimpse into how deeply spiritual beliefs were woven into daily life in traditional Korean society.
