Baridegi: The Abandoned Princess Who Became a Guide for the Dead
Among the most powerful figures in Korean shamanic mythology is Baridegi (바리데기), a princess whose story blends tragedy, courage, and spiritual transformation.
Her legend appears in traditional shamanic narratives called bonpuri, recited during rituals performed by Korean shamans known as mudang. These stories explain the origins of important spiritual figures.
According to the myth, Baridegi was born as the seventh daughter of a king who desperately wanted a son. Disappointed, the king ordered the newborn princess to be abandoned. Her name “Baridegi” literally means “the thrown-away one.”
Despite this rejection, Baridegi survived and grew into a brave young woman. Years later, when her parents fell gravely ill, the only cure was a sacred medicine found in the distant realm of the dead.
None of her older sisters dared to make the journey. Baridegi alone volunteered.
Her journey took her across dangerous landscapes and into the underworld itself. Through perseverance and compassion, she obtained the life-giving water and returned to save her parents.
Because of her courage, Baridegi became a spiritual guide who helps souls travel safely to the afterlife.
In Korean shamanic belief, she is revered as a protector of spirits and a symbol of selfless devotion.
Her story reminds listeners that even those once rejected can become powerful protectors of others.
